The Rawls College Gives Back

by - Dec 15, 2016

Beyond The Classroom

The Rawls College prides itself on preparing its students for real-world experiences and a career in business. One class taught by Bob McDonald, associate marketing professor, went above and beyond by making classroom lessons count for something more than just a grade. McDonald teaches two personal selling classes through service learning, which gears assignments toward benefiting the community.

“I challenge my students to each raise $300 for a local nonprofit organization. This semester, 50 students chose this assignment and raised a total of $19,300. One student alone raised $1,760 and two others raised $700,” McDonald said.

McDonald expressed his pride that his students did not get the money from their parents, nor did they use Go Fund Me pages. They took the lessons learned in the classroom and applied them to raise the money.

“They went out and sold. They learned how to sell. They had failures along the way to their success, but they learned. I could not be prouder of these young women and men,” McDonald said.

The nonprofit organization that benefited from these students’ donations is Sondra’s Song, a local organization whose mission is to transition youth out of foster care and into independent living. According to Sondra’s Song, intensive education regarding independent living is implemented to help these children.
