Vivian Luu, a senior Management major from Saginaw, Texas and president of the Texas Tech Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), has been awarded the Larry Burk Memorial Undergraduate Scholarship from the SHRM Foundation. The competitive scholarship is awarded to students who demonstrate great potential as future leaders in human resources. Of the 100 applicants who applied, only eleven undergraduates received the scholarship.
The scholarship is named after the late Larry Burk, who was a committed human resource professional and was heavily involved with the SHRM organization. “The generosity of Larry Burk’s family will help me further my education and complete my degree,” Luu said.
Luu joined SHRM in Feb. 2015 because she had a growing interest in human resources since it included many subjects she enjoys like, teaching, law and organizational behavior. Since becoming involved with the organization, she has assisted the Lubbock chapter of SHRM in winning the 2016 Pinnacle award and was sponsored to attend the 2016 HR Southwest Conference where she had the opportunity to network with HR professionals from around the state. She became the president of the Texas Tech chapter of SHRM in May 2016.
“Through my involvement in the Society for Human Resource Management, I have received countless educational opportunities that promote my professional and personal development,” she said. “SHRM is a great organization that focuses on the transition of their members from students to working professionals. With their support, I have grown tremendously as a student and am more prepared to enter my career.”
