Alumnus Spotlight: Matthew Reiter, Accounting

by - Mar 28, 2017

Matthew Reiter has approximately 20 years of public accounting experience, auditing both public and private clients. His experience focuses primarily in the following industries: technology; healthcare; manufacturing; and distribution, logistics and services. Additionally, he has one year of experience with a Fortune 100 publicly-held company as an internal advisor on SEC and U.S. GAAP accounting and reporting issues. At Whitley Penn, Reiter currently serves as the technical resource partner for accounting and auditing issues, in addition to serving his audit clients. He also serves as the partner in charge of technology for the audit practice. Reiter graduated from Texas Tech University with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting in 1996. In the Q&A below, learn about his time with the Rawls College and what advice he has for current students.

How have the skills you acquired through your accounting degree helped in your career?

Graduating with a strong educational background is a great platform to launch your career. Texas Tech definitely provided me with that background, and when I started in public accounting I was on par with other graduates from across the nation.

What did you do, as both a student and entry-level employee, to position yourself for success?

I believe that three key drivers of success – in any facet of your life – are possessing a positive attitude, demonstrating a strong work ethic, and understanding the importance of communication and interpersonal skills in your day to day interactions. It’s difficult to demonstrate these all the time, but I have worked to make them part of my daily life as much as possible.

What qualities do you (and your company) look for in recent graduates applying for entry-level positions?

Texas Tech has been a great recruiting campus for Whitley Penn. Our firm looks for students that are looking for a career and not just a job. We are focused on finding highly motivated individuals with a strong work ethic that enjoy working in a collaborative team environment.

What is your fondest memory of the Rawls College?

The relationships I developed with many of my classmates have endured post-graduation including current co-workers and clients. On an annual basis for almost the past twenty years, several of us still get together with our families.

What advice would you give current students in the Rawls College who are interested in a career in accounting/finance?
A career in accounting, including a background in public accounting, provides individuals the opportunity to pursue many different career paths. Many of the business owners and CEO’s I know today started their career in accounting, and are thankful for the strong financial knowledge foundation they developed early on.
