Rawls Student Establishes Global Business Brigades Chapter at Texas Tech

by - Mar 28, 2017

Kloe Burris, a junior Agriculture and Applied Economics and General Business dual major from Poteet, Texas founded a Global Business Brigades chapter at Texas Tech University in October 2016. Read more about the organization in the Q&A below.

What is the Global Business Brigades?

The Global Business Brigades is an organization that goes on annual weeklong business brigades to countries such as Panama and Honduras. During these brigades, students conduct market research for an emerging small business and propose a business plan to them at the end of the week. Students also host financial literacy education workshops for families and small businesses, as well as communicate the importance of saving money and how to go about doing so. The main involvement for students throughout the year will be working together to fundraise for the trip and preparing to visit the countries.

Why did you decide to establish the Global Business Brigades here at Texas Tech?

I went on with the Global Health Brigades to Panama in May 2016 where I learned about the Business chapter of the Global Brigades organization. I decided to establish the Global Business Brigades at Texas Tech University because of the impact the organization can have on students as well as the communities to which we travel. Students have the opportunity to travel affordably and gain service experience while learning about international business. While in the countries we are visiting, we are able to see firsthand the issues they are facing and have a direct impact on their lives. As college students, we are able to truly make a difference in the lives of thousands of people while gaining knowledge about our desired career choice.

Who can get involved and how do they go about doing so?

The Global Business Brigades is a business organization that is directed towards business, communications, marketing, and agricultural economics students. While these students will benefit the most from the brigade, it is open to all students. The brigade planned for this May is currently full, but students who are interested in joining and going on a brigade May 2018 can contact me at kloe.burris@ttu.edu.
