Kent Hance Interviews CEO of AT&T, Randall Stephenson

by - May 02, 2017

Kent Hance, chancellor emeritus of the Texas Tech University System, interviewed the current CEO of AT&T, Randall Stephenson on Tuesday April 18 at the Rawls College. They discussed Stephenson’s educational background, his career advancements and what be believes are traits of successful people.

Stephenson received a B.S. in accounting from the University of Central Oklahoma. He started college as an animal husbandry major but said he decided to pursue accounting because of the encouragement from his accounting professor. He went on to receive a Master of Accountancy from the University of Oklahoma.

After graduating with his masters in 1982, he started his career at Southwestern Bell Telephone. He worked his way up the company and was appointed the company’s senior executive vice president and chief financial officer in 2001. He went on to become the chief operating officer in 2004 and stayed at the position until 2007. He was appointed to the AT&T board of directors in 2005 and, in 2007, became the chairmen and chief executive officer of AT&T.

Stephenson talked about high performers and what makes them so sought after. He said high performers are people who are operating at a 30 to 40 percent higher level than their peers. They start a task, take it apart and leave it better than they found it. He said high performers are what AT&T looks for in employees.

“It was a great opportunity to hear from one of the most influential people business today. From humble small-town beginnings to extraordinary corporate success, Mr. Stephenson is truly an inspiration,” said Garrett Robinson, a junior finance major from Troy, TX.
