Dr. Elizabeth Karam Awarded the Excellence in Teaching Award

by - May 15, 2017

Dr. Elizabeth Karam, assistant professor of management at the Rawls College of Business, has been awarded the Texas Tech University Excellence in Teaching Award for 2017. The award recognizes excellence in teaching and one professor from the college is chosen. Karam was nominated by the Interim Dean of the Rawls College, Paul Goebel, in a letter submitted to the Office of the Provost and Senior Vice President.

In Goebel’s nomination letter, he highlighted Karam’s teaching success, provided student quotes regarding her impact as a teacher and reflected on her service to the Rawls College.

“In her relatively short time here, Dr. Karam has solidified her reputation as an outstanding teacher,” said Goebel in his nomination letter. “I am confident that her outstanding record with respect to teaching warrants her nomination for the President’s Excellence in Teaching Award.”

Karam started at the Rawls College in 2012 and has taught at both the graduate and undergraduate levels and primarily teaches leadership and business ethics. She consistently receives high student teaching evaluations.

“I am constantly inspired by the success of my students in the Rawls College and consider it a privilege to share in their educational journeys,” said Karam. “I thoroughly enjoy mentoring students as they move into the next phase of their professional or educational lives.”

Her excellence has not gone unnoticed for she been the recipient of many awards since starting at Texas Tech, including the TTU Institute for Inclusive Excellence Fellow in 2016, the Rawls College of Business Excellence in Faculty Service Award in 2016, the Rawls College of Business Dean’s Teaching Excellence Award in 2015 and the TTU Alumni Association New Faculty Award in 2014. She was also inducted to the TTU Teaching Academy in the fall of 2016.

In addition to her success as an educator, she has provided substantial service to the Rawls College. She has served on the Rawls College of Business Dean Search Committee, the Working Families Task Force and Graduate and Undergraduate Programs and Assessment Committees. She is a guest lecturer and mentor for the Rawls Business Leadership Program (RBLP) and has exemplified her dedication to student success by serving on numerous masters theses and doctoral dissertation committees.

“Being recognized with the President’s Excellence in Teaching Award is a tremendous honor,” said Karam. “I feel so fortunate to work in an environment that promotes and supports teaching excellence.”
