Juan Duran Wins “Up-and-Comer” Award From Los Hermanos Familia

by - May 18, 2017

Juan Duran, a junior accounting major from Lubbock, TX, won the “Up-and-Comer” award at the Adelante Awards event sponsored by Los Hermanos Familia on Friday, May 5. The recognition program honors Hispanic men in the Lubbock community who are excelling in their careers and volunteer efforts.

“Being chosen as an ‘Up-and-Comer’ really means a lot to me, especially to be honored in front of other Hispanic men that have done so much for our community,” said Duran. “It is an amazing feeling that leaves me with a desire to continue to push forward in order to achieve my full potential.”

Duran was nominated for the award by Dr. Francisco Delgadillo, Rawls College faculty director for diversity and associate professor of practice in information systems and quantitative sciences.

“Juan is not only an outstanding student who takes academics very seriously, but he is also a leader among his peers and has made an impact in the Lubbock community at a relatively young age through his community service,” said Delgadillo. “As his mentor in the Rawls Business Leadership Program, I’m extremely proud of all his accomplishments, especially this one.”

Duran said Delgadillo played an instrumental role has he transitioned from high school to college as a first generation college student and continues to have an impact on his growth as a young professional.

Duran has been on the president’s list every semester since starting at Texas Tech in the fall of 2014. Not only has excelled as a student, he has taken tremendous steps to gain professional experience as well. Last summer, he completed an internship with EY, one of the “Big Four” accounting firms, in Dallas and has worked as a tax intern during the 2016 and 2017 tax seasons at RPC CPAs and Consultants, LLP in Lubbock, TX. At the Rawls College, he works as a student assistant in the Dean’s Suite and is member of the Accounting Leadership Council and the Rawls Business Leadership Program.

“I hope to someday be in the position where I am able to give back to the people who have supported me so much,” said Duran.
